How widespread is the iPhone 3G S overheating problem?

Dave Merten Apple ico Jul 2, 2009 at 1:15am

imageApple is starting to get a lot of free advertising for their new iPhone 3G S models—unfortunately, in form of negative press. Yesterday, I was watching Fox News and they had a segment showing how white iPhones are turning yellow and brown from excessive heat. The reporter even comment that her iPhone gets so hot at times, she can’t even touch the screen. She feared if she put the phone next to her face, she would burn her skin.

If list is in A1 through A8000, for new values in column B, put in B1:

then replicate B1 through B8000

Video Card Options for 2.66 GHz Quad Mac Pro
All,

I'm wondering about the video card options for the original Quad 2.66 Mac Pro. I have the stock 7300 card and I've heard there are sometimes issues with running this card and Aperture. I'm thinking about getting Aperture, as well as thinking about Lightroom, but I haven't decided for sure yet. I'm running a trial of Aperture at the moment and haven't really noticed much of a problem, but I'm also not doing a whole lot with it. There have been a couple of times, since I installed the trial, that the screen took a bit of time to update, which is one of the problems of Aperture with the 7300, from what I gather. The X1900 and an Nvidia (IIRC) are listed as optional cards at www.everymac.com . Are these the only two card options? Any reason to spend the extra money on the Nvidia over the X1900? There seemed to be quite a difference in price when I checked at eBay.

Thanks for the help!
Sam

Depending on the specs that Apple put out and the contract some or all of that may be handled by the supplier/ Apple or both.

At any rate I'm not losing any sleep over them having to dip in to their $30 Billion cash reserve..

Re: Mobile me
For crying out loud.... here is the answer to the problem i was having...

About a month or so ago i changed my password and as i usually do i wrote down the new id and password. I had not logged in since changing it so when i went to go on this time i used the new password and get the "incorrect id or password" notice.

I then figured i must have wrote down the wrong password so i used the "forgot password" function and changed it. I received notice from them that the password had been changed so tried to log in again and once again i get the "incorrect id or password" notice.

I changed the password a total of about 6 times each time receiving notice it was changed and yet each time i try login it gives me the same notice.

So, i went back into my password book and looked up my old password from a couple of years ago. Imagine my surprise when lo and behold it logged me in. In other words all those 6 times i was notified that my password was changed, it really was not and was still the old password.

Oh ya, i still have received no response from the two customer (NON) support emails that i sent them. Nice work Apple!, been over at M$ taking lessons have you?

Should Apple buy Joost—or license some of its technologies?
Folks are always speculating about companies that Apple should buy, so I’ll add another to the list for discussion: Joost, an Internet television service. For now.

However, the company is restructuring, abandoning its hopes to be a successful ad-supported web TV provider. Instead it will sell its video-serving technology to other media companies, reports the IDG News Service.

Joost was building what I hope to see at some point in the iTunes/Apple TV world: true video on demand. Created by the folks who came up with Skype, the Joost peer-to-peer streaming technology was designed to provide a new way of watching TV on the Internet, which uses new and established technologies. Joost channels are like playlists of videos. You can flip between channels, or use the program guide to choose a channel or a video to watch.

The channels start when you play them and not at any particular day or time. If you let them continue they’ill loop round to the beginning again. If you change channels and then switch back again, you’ll start at the beginning of the program again. Joosters have different kinds of channels, including ones that behave more like ordinary TV channels (including the occasional ad).

So Joost and Apple? What if the Apple TV purchase model worked hand-in-hand with the advertising based model of traditional TV—well, maybe updated a little. More like the original model where you got to know who was sponsoring the show and didn’t get constant interruptions of commercial breaks.

Admittedly, the company’s plans to be an ad-supported web TV provider didn’t work out. According to IDG, Skype blamed an economy that has made it “increasingly challenging to operate as an independent, ad-supported online video platform.” In a company blog CEO Mike Volpi said that “in order to position ourselves well for the future, we began investigating additional lines of revenue for Joost.”

That investigation has led the company to shift its operations to providing white-label video platforms for companies interested in publishing web video, including cable and satellite companies. According to IDG, Joost thinks it can help companies build video portals cheaper, as it is an expensive and difficult proposition.

Joost’s withdrawal narrows the field of major players in online video. The top dogs now are Google’s YouTube and Hulu.com. IDG notes that in May Joost had 643,365 unique visitors, a nearly 23 percent gain over April, according to Compete, a web analytics firm that offers a free comparison tool on its Web site. But Joost lagged far behind its competitors. YouTube.com had 76.4 million unique visitors and Hulu.com had 8.2 million.
Still, imagine some sort of integration of the Joost technology/network with the Apple TV. And I’m sure it could be tied into iTunes as well.

A bit of extra juice like this and some serious gaming features for the Apple TV and the device might finally move beyond the “hobby” stage.

Even if the subcontractor replaced the battery, there still is the cost of labor to rebuild them, replacing the case of the iPhone and repackaging of it.

OS X problem with SSD?
http://www.macsimumnews.com/index.php/a ... ve_speeds/
"Mac OS X has an issue with couple of things, and this was bound to happen—the Apple-written SATA controller driver can get saturated by a single SSD drive on ocassion, but two will definitely saturate the bus. The underlying issue is the fact that Mac OS X comes with journaling filesystem, a feature not present on Windows-based file systems."

This is insane. They're arguing that Apple reduced the speed of its SATA controller from 3 to 1.5 Gb/sec because of this.

1. If they were having trouble, how would reducing the SATA speed help?
2. The SATA speed reduction was not universal. Some new systems retain 3 Gb/sec speed - indicating that it was probably a bug of some type rather than intentional.
3. I love the part about 2 SSD drives saturating the bus. How many Apple laptops can handle 2 internal SATA hard disks? Answer: none. His explanation is completely wrong.

Then there is the explanation - and his solution. Use a RAID controller, he says. But if the RAID system can provide data much faster than SATA 2 and OS X has no problem with that, how in the world does he conclude that the problem is in the OS?

Then the really good part. He says that they slowed down their SSD drive by 10 MB/sec (about 5%) in order to fix the problem - at the same time as he's suggesting that a separate RAID controller (which feeds the OS even faster) will also solve the problem.

There does appear to be a problem with the SATA controllers in the most recent MacBook Pro systems. Some of them are reporting SATA 1 speeds rather than SATA 2 speeds. But this 'expert's explanation just doesn't make sense. Rather it appears to be an excuse for their SSD cards running slower than some of the competition.

Why aren't your journalists questioning these idiotic claims made by vendors who clearly have an axe to grind?

Discolouration of iPhones "costly for Apple?"
"Fox News commented that if only 10% of the new iPhone’s were affected, that would still equate to over 100,000 needing repair, which could turn out to be very costly for Apple."

Should more truthfully read: "...that would still equate to over 100,000 needing repair, which could turn out to be very costly for whichever subcontractor produces the batteries for Apple which are causing the overheating."

Re: Next round of iMacs to get price cuts, new features?

Introduction is being held back because the mobile processors aren't available yet. That has caused the iMac line to have fallen well behind in performance compared to PCs that use desktop processors. Expect new iMacs when Intel can deliver, and this may be coincident with the release of Snow Leopard.

Agree that any price reductions will be for dual-core. Expect the quad core to replace the existing 3.06GHz model at the top of the line, probably at the same price point.

The new processors have 3-way interleaved memory so a bank of memory is three cards. That will make 6 GB the affordable option, and 12GB ridiculously expensive for the time being. Why can't they have two banks of memory like all but the bottom-end PCs? Apple will sell the upgrade for $1500 when it could be done for $150 with the extra bank.

I'd like to see a more user serviceable design, but seeing the trends, that's not likely to happen. I'd also like to see a half dozen USB ports. I could care less about SD since my camera uses CF. These things are so big why not a multi-format reader like PCs or even every photo printer I've got.

And then there is always the plea for the matte display.

Tried that, results were now i am no longer logged in in system prefs and i no longer have access to my idisk any longer. When i try and log back in it gives me the same old error message about bad id or password.

Also tried the apple 800 # for help and all i got was a recorded referral back to the website which is pretty much useless. So, here i sit with no access to Mobile Me email or idisk.
