Japan is investigating a possible battery defect in the iPod nano after two of the devices overheated in Tokyo, scorching nearby paper and a straw-woven mat, according to a news report Tuesday citing a government official.
Japanese economic ministry official Hiroyuki Yoshitsune said no one was injured in the incidents and there was no further damage, according to MarketWatch. Yoshitsune cited a similar ministry report in March about sparks shooting out of an iPod nano. The Japanese government has been working with Apple to determine the cause, the report said.
The music player’s lithium-ion battery was the suspected cause in all three cases, with the iPods overheating while the batteries were being recharged.
