My son gave me his old power book g3 (I think it is a Wall street by the looks of it)
I was going to give it to a friend of mine who still uses Mac OS9.2 When I power it up it goes through the loading stage with the OS 9.2 icon coming up and starts to load but then the little blue process bar stops about a 1/4 of the way and everything freezes. Like I said I was going to give this to my friend. Is it worth having him take it to a local repair shop (that has done apple work for years) and see if it's worth keeping? I know he is going to have to get new batteries. I do remember my son saying that upped the ram about two years ago. Any thoughts?

Hi Bennie
Welcome to becoming a member!
I have an old Wallstreet as well, now it is at my mums house in Australia, she uses it for email and some limited surfing, (movie timetables, etc), for this its fine as it does not have much (processor) power. It ran fine with 8.6 but i think she now has panther for ease of use, which brings me to this point, if you have a specific task for it to do like this then its fine but with a 233mz processor you may find it frustrating slow at doing complex tasks.
Also my Wallstreet has no usb port and i cannot describe how painful that can be when on the road (burning cd's or adhoc networking to share files with friends, ive even used fax machines as printers when in a pinch) :roll:
So if your powerbook doesnt have usb, then this needs to be taken into account in the cost of repair versus usability argument.
If its the one with usb and a copper coloured keyboard,(later than the Wallstreet) then i have two friends who bought these (together) and have had very good service from them.
I would recommend running disk warrior or reinstalling the OS software and take it from there.
They are still a nice looking machine, and built solidly.
cheers
matty

Try holding down the shift key on start-up to turn off the extensions to see if you can get all the way to the desktop. Sounds like you may be having an extension conflict.

As for which G3 powerbook it is for sure, there is an easy check. Look at the ports on the back of the machine.

SCSI, Serial, no USB = Wallstreet
SCSI, USB, no Serial = Lombard
Firewire = Pismo

The Lombard and Pismo both have bronze keyboards.
